this is a work in progress...not yet finished, but i think it's kinda fun to take a look at the process and so i would like to document this one i work along on it.

it's a 4'x4' panel and i'm using a couple of different materials here: house paint, acrylic/gesso, guache, a variety of inks with a crow quill pen for those tiny lines in the details.

it's taken four days to get to this point with it....building up those tiny lines can really swallow up the time.

This is a new project....a collaboration with my friend, Annabel.
I've had this urge for awhile now to work with porcelain but to be honest with myself there are only so many things you can try to be good at and there is no way I am catching up to the talent of the likes of Annabel at the wheel.
The process of collaborating has also been on my wish list, but up until now I have not found the right person/project to pursue.
This is the perfect project. Working with Annabel is exactly what I need right now.....we're our own little mutual admiration society. It's such a fun process of designing: problem solving, experimenting and humor (well, with Annabel humor is always a major component).
Something about this process of collaborating has freed me up to play with design more....and more lightly (because it is a contribution? the nature of the project?) and more focused (Annabel cracks that whip). And I'm curious to see how it grows.

Annabel's studio is tucked into the back of her enchanting (seriously; a pond, wysteria, magnolias, frogs at night..etc. ) back yard. It's a dusty clay space adorned with old wood block stamps from everywhere, plants, paintings, butterflies, tools, colors, books....it's a crazy good space. I can lose myself in it, and I did.....the day spent drawing these I sat in the same chair for 7 straight hours without getting up to eat or stretch....it had seemed more like 3. (I don't just mean these few...there are 24 cups to our primary experimental batch)
So, she gets these 24 out of the kiln and brings them down to my work because we don't have the patience to wait for the next day and we immediately begin the process of problem solving again and mentally noting the do's and don'ts of the next batch.
Annabel is also a highly productive and motivated person....she's set her demand at 40 for the next batch! Hear that whip snap?

Thank you to Two Thirds Sky for this link to such a rich artist. I'm hooked on this palette, though there are some really great vibrant pieces on her site as well in the strong yellows and oranges of the road signs that are the original materials. Her materials also include corrugated tin, plywood and masonite. I've loved perusing the pages. The fact that Rosalie Gascoigne would be just about my grandmother's age (if she had not already passed) and made much of this work in her 70's is a great piece of inspiration as well.

Turns out I have my laptop for just a day or two more and so as I stumbled upon this beautiful work over at My Love For You I had to include it here.
This is the work of Kristen Hassenfeld, installations of discarded objects brought together in a most delicious way. (more images here)
In her words:
"I have begun to look towards unwanted, existing objects as a raw material, thus yoking my interest in our impact on the natural world with my focus on the decorative. The resulting sculptures are built from small ornamental and utilitarian objects, found in thrift stores, gutters and junk drawers, literally piled one atop the other, to reveal complex symmetrical forms, reminiscent of historic turned wood and ivory tabletop ornaments. The bits of matter I employ have outlived their useful lives, and so have been repurposed. Old buttons, bottle caps, old crockery, and the like combine, their past lives in conversation. They exist in remarkable harmony, their individual identities blurred, restless objects now at rest."

I've been distracted all week.
I found these beautiful pieces over at at Wild Horses and I'm smitten.
And inspired.
And a little concerned
because I'm so inspired to take out a needle and thread and attack the vintage wool blankets that I've been collecting for years.....
but I'm experiencing some of the worst tendinitis ever. Even typing this post is somewhat painful.

I've been searching for the thing which won't kill my hands and arms but everything I love involves using them and any use at all seems to be more than these poor limbs can handle.
I have to admit I've already started in with the stitching
and am really loving it.

These images are from the Sri website and blog, both which are gorgeous with stitches and indigo.

The collection I'm in love with are the Boro (rags), which are mended items of the home. At one time they were looked upon shamefully as evidence of poverty, but their unselfconscious beauty is becoming fully appreciated now. I love that they arose out of function and utility and are now resurrected as objects of art and beauty. They so richly meld so much; layers of mark making and texture, history and human condition.

It is time to give acupuncture a shot....or a poke...or whatever.

Margareta Kern has documented women in Croatioa, Bosnia and Herzgovina who have been making clothes in which they want to be buried. This is not an established custom or tradition, she heard of it while in her mother's dress shop. Just a small population of women are doing this, but she traveled around the area and managed to photograph and interview many of them.
This is such a beautiful project to consider, and the images are no less amazing to me.

This is part of a collection that I found which we will be seeing in the future in the form of a small road-trip book. They are a odd mixture of the amazing and the mundane all from one of my most nostalgic eras: that of my earliest years, which make me feel a certain ownership over these. (That, and the fact that someone gave these coveted moments up) I can almost swear I've witnessed the bits and pieces that make up these images, but in a different time and place.

My latest happy thrift store find is this circa 1970 book of Eskimo poetry illustrated by Oonark, whom I just guessing is a inuit himself.
It's generous with the playful illustrations.....a quality I admire in a book.

The Loveliness of Lark Press

In spite of the lack of sleep, which is not due to active debauchery, but a, hopefuly temporary yet inconvenient sleeping disorder which has set in the last few days, my long weekend in Portland has been good.
Lots of good girl-family time, which is rare and prized.
And a bit of shopping.
The most satisfying of which was here. Lark Press is my dream shop and this time I had the good luck to meet Nik of Bittersugar, who has a show just across the street of a phonetic alphabet at Ristretto Roasters at 3808 N Williams. You can see more photos on her blog.

My plan is to get one for each letter in my family: PEAQ. I'm very excited about this, though I have no wall space in my home yet, so I will have to clear a wall first.

So happy that I gave my son a Q name, because that quail is so perfect he makes my teeth hurt.

Ok, so this takes a little more than 5 minutes (without buffering) and is amazing to see. My computer takes an agonizingly long time with the buffering, and I was happy to see it through to the end.
This stop motion of a limited edition artist's book being made from printing to binding was made by Abigail Uhteg at the Women's Studio Workshop by compiling some 3000 photographs. See more info here.

It's a slim edition of 7 and just 4"x4" in dimension, but full of old images culled from turn-of-the-century books of Paris and text (and this part I love) that has been selected from a much larger work of Walter Benjamin on the modern city.
I love what happens when text and images are recontextualized and made into something beautifully, uniquely it's own, but with a thread of the original ideas.

I found this over at The Ladies of Letterpress. Appeals to the Luddite in me. My clamshell press is not a lot more complex than this, really, which is exactly what I love about it. There are no motors running while I'm working, maybe just some Leonard Cohen crooning in the background and the levers and hinges of the press gliding. It's a quiet, meditative process (not as fast as these two at work).
Lately, as I'm gearing up for holiday faires my studio is feeling like an old-school Santa's Workshop and I find that's actually influencing the designs I'm coming up with which are heading more towards toys and decorations of a more hands-on era. I'm enjoying the process very much.

When we visited the Getty a few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of wondering through the many rooms of Irving Penn's work. They were the images of people of all walks of life dressed in their work clothes from London, New York and Paris. It was an amazing show; hundreds of images stacked salon style and each one of them commanding your attention for its details, or its humor or its mystery and all shot in a purely unadorned, naturally lit studio with a large format camera.
Classic.
I was saddened to see that Irving Penn died today at 92.

Oh, I think that it will take me a few posts to share my enthusiasm for GA, Savannah especially! I'm starting here with a few of the gorgeous interiors of some of my favorites. I could definitely have spent more time in this town, I can tell there is much richness under the lovely surface which I barely had begun to scratch.
The first three images are from the Back In The Day Bakery. Mmm...red velvet cupcakes!
The next two are diner cars that Savannah College of Art and Design have restored and opened for business.
The next three are from Gallery Espresso, I made it a point to be there every day, it was just that nice!
(I will show some work that was showing there in a post soon.)
And finally, I have to get the link for this soon and will include it, but this is a bistro we returned to not only for the great atmosphere but for the shrimp and grits!

I'm in GA for the weekend having a little getaway with Pipo. Today he is speaking at the Lamar Dodds Scool of Art here in Athens. I'm spending the days wandering through this inspiring and quirky town. I like it.
We've had great culinary fortune here in GA, beginning with a beautiful Southern fare at The Flying Biscuit in Atlanta and again last night and this morning at The Grit, here in Athens. What these places share are an seemingly effortless ability to serve you the tastiest home cooking with a friendly pride with personality and beauty in every object and surface that surrounds you! This is SO my style!
I lived in GA for only my first 6 months...is it possible I absorbed a bit of the DNA in that time?

Lately I seem to have birds on the brain.

It was definitely fueled, partly, by the freakish number of ravens I saw perching on fence posts lining I-5 last week.

The finches at the Grange Co-op seem to be telepathically manipulating me to take them home.

If you know me well you know I'm Quail-giddy already.

I'm scoping out chickens on Craigslist, visualizing a coop in my backyard.

I've been trying, in vain, to coax birds into my backyard all summer with an array of feeders.

So far, no birds.

I'm determined not to be too impulsive about this... but I think I will start building a chicken coop soon.

It's inevitable.

I know I'm not alone in this.

Spent part of the weekend at our cabin in the woods, then a hike down to Crater Lake. We were going to see if we could jump into the lake but it was a little chilly and windy, so we made friends with the chipmunks, one of whom helped himself to Q's snickers. I think we broke some rules, but they were just so darn cute.
The lake is amazing, such an intense blue! The hike down was easy but it's a workout on the way back up. I've been there several times but have never hiked down to the lake, so this time I made a point of getting to the actual water. Very glad I did.

It was a great week in the studio playing with this "new" vintage wallpaper that I've found.

I've developed a nice groove with assembling these sketchbooks and am having fun with the process (I know it looks like serious chaos, but there's method to the madness) as well as major satisfaction with the results.
If there is anything more satisfying than sitting back and looking at a full stack of perfectly printed, folded and packaged letterpress cards it would have to be relishing a stack of freshly assembled, perfectly square, finished books.

It feels like summer is winding down and I always have mixed feelings about this. Mostly cozy with a touch of melancholy. Many good weeks still left in the garden, though.
Above are a few avocado pits that I've started.
Below is Q in the garden with the nasturtiums that I've been enjoying all summer.
This is the first year I've grown these amazing little flowers and after a full summer of their gorgeous little faces gracing my vegetable bed, keeping pests away and decorating my salads, I can't imagine I'll ever have a garden without them.

24 short hours in Portland to celebrate our 15th was just enough time to visit a few favorite spots and discover a few new ones.
I always love milling about the Mississippi area, the cutest neighborhood around, I think. I was sad to see that Flutter was gone.....I'm hoping it just moved? But was thrilled to finally get a chance to visit this little boutique nursery in the top photo.....if plants can make your heartbeat just a little faster they most certainly will here.

Oblation Papers...........(swoon).... in the Pearl.

I've forgotten the name of this breakfast cafe in the Pearl (anyone?) but it had a high collectors' love factor and low hipster invasion element (hipsters are just fine, but there is a saturation point) which made it the perfect spot.

Hotel Monaco.........super cute.....highly recommended!

Doug Fir Lounge.....got the Dust a little drunk then finished his drink for him. To his credit, they do make them strong.

It's been so long since I've been here that when we visited Cannery Row I could no longer recognize it as any place I had ever visited or visualized. I can't imagine the confusion Steinbeck would feel if he experienced it now. The aquarium, however is gorgeous. He may have appreciated that, at least.

It's been a few weeks since this day trip to the Oregon Caves so I'm just catching up.
In the 70's, when I was about my son's age, we took a trip to the caves that I never forgot.
A tactile, cold, wet, magical experience where I learned the bulk of what I know about caves. Some of the anecdotes I can remember word for word and found comforting that they used them still in their tour (word for word). I was amazed, again, to be descending some 300' into the earth and tromping amongst the stalagtites and stalagmites, though this time without the psychedelic red and blue light show they used to awe the crowds in the 70's and more hand rails and walkways built in.... as with most tourist events, made a little tamer, a little more tasteful and a little safer than what we experienced in the 70's.
All of this failed to impress my 11 year old son. Maybe it was his mood, the car sickness from the brutal last 17 miles of tight turns leading to the caves, or just that few things seem to impress my sons they way they did me at their age.
The lodge, built in '38 and is covered in tree bark, and houses this tiny lunch cafe which serves decadent milkshakes remenescient of it's era which did make a lasting impression on my son, though, unfortunately it was just bad luck that we missed out on actually getting one.

The first 4 years of my life were spent around Anchorage, AK. My parents had packed my 3 brothers and me, when I was just an infant, into an old green school bus and left the south for what they hoped was a new and pure frontier, the image of homesteading probably in their minds. We had 3 goats, what I remember to be a constant rotation of different dogs (which seem to pack up and run off with the wolves), faceless cats and a guinea pig named Peaches and Cream. Alaska was in my past before my mind knew how to store memories in a way I could draw from later. But as Faulkner says "Memory believes before knowing remembers. Believes longer than recollects, longer than knowing even wonders". My memories are vague, fragmented, and dreamlike, so much so that I can't be sure of what's fact and what's fiction. What I'm left with is a wash of bits and pieces of scenes and sounds:
...hours old, wet baby goats skating on wobbly legs through the house...
.............mom chasing a perplexed wolf away from the goats with a broom...
..sitting in the steeing wheel of the bus spinning to and fro while it sat abandoned in the driveway...
.............................disappearing into the back of the piano...
.........my fingers in the curly hair of the face of a giant buffalo...
...running behind horses on a dirt road..(it was snowing?)
When I stumbled upon the blog Grass Doe I was immediately sucked into the images and then the mystery of where these images were coming from. There is no explanation of the images nor presence of the author of the blog. Over the the last few weeks I have been perusing the pages imagining the possibilities of their origin. I admit I was maybe a little disappointed to find that they were, in fact, someone else's life and not some(magical)how a stash of photos from my own memory.
On the other hand, photographer, Jonathan Levitt's website is a rich collection of gorgeous images from all over the nation (though, in fact, not AK, I think) including some lush food photography as he is a contributor to my favorite food mag, Saveur, among others. In the end, I am glad to have found out about him, but there was something lovely in the imagining.
